William B. O'Neil was a two-sport star at Norwich, making his mark in soccer and hockey and earning three letters in each sport. A soccer co-captain in his senior year and team MVP his last two seasons, he was named to the Vermont All-State team in 1963 and 1964, an honor he also received in hockey as a senior (1964-65). In 1965, he was the recipient of the prestigious ECAC Academic/Athletic Award. 
A three-year member of the Varsity Club, Bill was a member of the NU Band and the Corps Honor Committee for two years each. He served as class officer in 1964 and 1965 and was a swimming instructor during his last three years.

After graduation, Bill began an extremely successful career as a soccer and hockey coach and an English teacher. A Saranac Lake, NY native, he spent his first six years in coaching at his alma mater, the Northwood School in Lake Placid, NY, where he also served as Director of Athletics. He returned to Vermont in 1973 as Head Hockey Coach at Essex Junction High School, assuming the reins of the women's soccer program six years later. His teams have won five Vermont State Championships - hockey in 1981, 1985, and 1986 and soccer in 1984 and 1985. He was named Hockey Night in Boston Coach-of-the-Year in 1985, 1989, and 1990. He was named to coach in the Rotary All--Star Hockey Classic in 1985, 1986, and 1988 and was the coach of the Twin State Girls' Soccer team from Vermont in 1983 and 1989.
His devotion to coaching has extended to the Essex Junction youth hockey and soccer leagues as well as to Little League baseball He has also worked as pool manager and swimming instructor for the town. Bill further serves his community as a lector in Holy Family Church in Essex Junction.
Bill continues to coach hockey and women's soccer at Esex Junction High School while also teaching English at all levels. Earlier this year, he completed his master's in Education at St. Michael's. Bill and his wife, Mary Catherine, are the parents of eight children: sons Scott, Mike, Dan, Matt, and Cullen; and daughters Tracy, Kathryn,, and Meredith. The family resides in Essex Junction, VT.
