John Hurynowicz excelled as a four-year member of the Cadet ice hockey team during the early sixties.Â
John helped the Cadets post three winning records in four years at Norwich. As a senior, he co-captained the team and earned Division II All-East and All-Vermont recognition while leading NU to a 13-8 record.Â
John graduated with a degree in education in 1965 and went on to serve in Vietnam. He earned several military honors for bravery while serving as the platoon leader of the 11th Armored Calvary. John earned the Soldier's Medal for Heroism, the Bronze Star for Heroism, the Combat Infantryman's Badge and a purple heart for his service.Â
Upon returning home to Plymouth,Mass. in 1967, John began a teaching and coaching career. He played a pivotal role in the emergence of high school hockey along the south shore of Massachusetts by starting a self supporting high school league, and coaching the Plymouth North High School team for two years, directing his team to the league championship each season.Â
In 1969, John began a 25-year stint as a math teacher and guidance counselor at Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston, Mass. He was a member of the High School/Collegiate Hockey Officials Organization during that time. He later returned to Plymouth North High School as an adjustment counselor working with students at risk in 1994. Since that time he also served as the school's varsity hockey and golf coach. Â
