A three year starter in both basketball and baseball, Richard D'Elia was one of the finest two-sport athletes ever to compete at Norwich University.
A starting point-guard in basketball, Richard led the Cadets to a Vermont State Championship as a sophomore and was voted to WCAX-TV's Knickerbocker World of Sports All-Star Team. Noted for his ball-handling skills and excellent outside shooting, he led the team in assists for three years while averaging 14 points per game.Â
On the baseball diamond, Richard was an outstanding second baseman who led the Cadets to three consecutive winning seasons beginning his sophomore year. He led the team in virtually every offensive category including home runs, runs batted in, extra-base hits, and stolen bases.Â
Richard also distinguished himself away from the athletic fields as an undergraduate. He served on the sophomore class Club Board of Governors, was a member of the Class Honor Committee in his sophomore and junior years, and worked as junior class treasurer.Â
Prior to coming to Norwich, Richard had been an outstanding three-sports athlete at Worcester North High School in Massachusetts. There, he earned All-City recognition as the quarterback for a football team which compiled a state record 28 game winning streak in his three seasons on the varsity squad. Richard was also a three-year starter in both basketball and baseball while at Worcester North. He captained both teams in his senior season and gained All-City honors as a second baseman in baseball. He capped off his high school athletic career by being named as Worcester North's All-Around Athlete of the Decade for the 1950's.Â
Richard graduated from Norwich in 1963 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics. He entered the United States Army after graduation and served two years in Germany where he reached the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After two years of reserve duty from 1965-67, Richard entered the private sector in 1968 as a sales representative for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. He has remained with the company for the past 25 years.
Richard and his wife, Nancy, now reside in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. They have four children; Richard Jr., Lisa, Richelle, and Lori.Â
