A dual-sport athlete that was a standout football player andmember of the track & field squad at Norwich. Phaneuf was athree-year letter winner in football and earned the OutstandingPlay award at halfback vs. Bates and the US Coast Guard Academy in1967. He caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the final minuteto lift the Cadets to a 14-10 win over Coast Guard. He was also atwo-year letter winner on the track & field team and high-pointman three years in a row.

Phaneuf recalled some of his favorite Norwich memories werecoming back in the late summer for early football training withtriple sessions.

“We had some great coaches up at Norwich with Joe Sabol,Barry Mynter, Frank Hershey and Lefty Lyford,” Phaneuf said.“I still get together with a lot of the guys I playedfootball with and we talk about a lot of the memories over theyears. We were legends in our own time.

After graduation, Phaneuf was in the service for two years withone year in Korea and one year stateside. After the Army he had acareer mostly in I-Tech and he retired three years ago.

Phaneuf lives in Marlborough, Mass. and is married to his wifeSusan. They have two kids, Aimee and Robert along with twograndchildren, Stella (four) and Henry (1.5 years).
