Schmidt was a three-year letterwinner on the football team. He served as a co-captain as a senior in 1961 and was also named to the Vermont All-State team as well. Schmidt helped lead the Cadets to an 8-13-2 record and was a mainstay on the Cadets' offensive line under head coach Bob Priestley.
