Bruce McGill was co-captain of the 1979 Norwich Football team that went 8-2, which at the time was the best in NU history. Individually, he was named Defensive Player of the Year by the New England Football Newsletter and was named NCAA Division lll All-American Second Team. Additionally, he was named to both the Associated Press and the ECAC All-New England Teams. McGill was also named as NU Defensive MVP for both his junior and senior years and lists being elected team captain as of his honors.
"You feel the responsibility ( of representing) the school on and off the field." Following his playing days at Norwich, McGill signed a free agent contract with the New England Patriots were still several years away from winning Super Bowls, McGill says it was still exciting to get a chance to tryout with the hometown team.
"I watched Steve Nelson as inside linebacker and one of the premier linebackers of the NFL at the time," recalls McGill. "I also remember watching (All-Pro tackler) John Hannah and Steve Grogan was the quarterback.
" McGill graduated with a BS majoring in Business Administration with a minor in finance. He achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Corps of Cadets , made the dean's list on a few occasions, and was a member of Skull of Swords. Following graduation, he went on to the coach at Dover, Massachusetts. Today, he the regional vice president for a Boston-based company that picks up delivers dry cleaning for homes and business.
" I have never bumped into a Norwich grad that isn't happy at what they doing." said , McGill. "NU gave me a lot of leadership skills and discipline to succeed personally and professionally." Bruce and wife Frances have been married for 21 years and they are parents of two sons and daughter. He enjoys spending time with his family and is an avid biker.
