Like his teammate Carl Hughes, Joe MCCLoskey has several letters from National Football League teams, including the Chicago Bears, the New York Giants, the Detroit Lions, and the Philadelphia Eagles to attest to the type of football player he was for Norwich during the pre-war years. But football wasn't the only sport Joe excelled in. He was also outstanding as a 4-year mainstay on the Norwich basketball team.
At 6 feet, 5 inches and 220 pounds, "Giant" Joe was a huge man by pre-war standards, when many teams had only one or two men over 200 pounds on their entire roster. He was a member of the Norwich football team that won the Vermont State Championship by outstanding Middlebury and the University of Vermont by combined score of 163-0Â during the 1940 and 1941 seasons. Joe was elected captain of the 1941 team.Â
As a member of the basketball team, Joe was regarded as a tugged rebounder who was counted on to anchor a tough Norwich team at both ends of the floor. He was elected co-captain during his senior year. For his efforts on the basketball court and the gridiron, Joe was awarded the Norwich Athletic Council Alumni Cup in 1942.Â
While at Norwich, Joe was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, and the class Sergeant-at-Arms.Â
After graduation Joe entered the United States Army where he earned the rank of Captain and Company Commander. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military career, Joe joined the Department of Justice as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.Â
Joe entered the private sector as a salesman for heavy equipment with Casellni-Venable Corporation in Barre and later Reynolds and Son, also in Barre. He is a lifetime member of the Vermont Association of Engineers.Â
Joe and his wife, Jane, reside in Bellows Falls.Â
