Bill Avery first met Athletic Director Tony Mariano when he was a junior in high school. His hockey coach, Jack Fletcher, was an alumna from the class of 1972 and helped recruit him to Norwich. Avery remembers waking up his first morning at Norwich and thinking, "What am I doing here?" Despite such a start, he distinguished himself at Norwich in the hockey arena.
Avery served as the team captain for two years. In 1991 Avery was elected to the All-Tournament Team in the Codfish Bowl Tournament. In 1992 he received several honors. He was elected to the All-Tournament Team in the Salem State Tournament where he earned the title of MVP. Avery also earned a spot on the ECAC East 2nd Team as well as the NE Sports Writers All-Star Team for his season accomplishments. Mariano recalls he was "a great two-way player and a very good leader."
A Criminal Justice major, Avery stays that he received rank in the corps because of his hockey status. His studies and experiences at Norwich were "instrumental" when he chose to become a police officer.
Avery now serves as a Lieutenant in the Patrol Command Division on the Hudson, New Hampshire police department. Starting his law enforcement career right after his Norwich years, Avery worked his way through the ranks. He has performed a wide variety of duties including detective work and investigating various types of crimes. Avery was promoted to Lieutenant in late 2005 and adds "it's a very rewarding career."
Avery is a native of Chelmsford, Mass., and now resides in Londonderry, New Hampshire. In his spare time he plays golf, works out to stay in shape and travels. Avery visits his parents in Punta Gorda, Florida often and is extremely grateful for their love and support. Avid fans, they missed only a couple hockey games in his entire college career, traveling all over the country to support him.
