In his four years at Norwich, FrankĀ Simonetti was one of the most versatile Cadets to grace the campus.
A four-year starter in soccer and hockey, he captained the soccer team in his senior year, leading the Cadets to an 11-3-1 record and an ECAC playoff berth. An assistant captain of the hockey team, he led the squad to the ECAC Playoffs and received All-America recognition in that same year.
Frank was a perennial dean;s list student in mechanical engineering and was the 1984 recipient of the Garrity Award, given to NU's outstanding scholar-athlete. He was also vice-president of his class, an elected member of the Corps Honor Committee, an officer in the Corps of Cadets, and a Rhodes Scholarship nominee.
A year later, Simonetti was honored with the prestigious Olympia Award which recognizes outstanding amateur athletes who also exemplify the Olympic ideals of leadership and achievement beyond the sports arena. Though the award was given for his accomplishments at Norwich, by the time he received it Frank had just completed his rookie season with the Boston Bruins.Ā
Simonetti had gone to the Bruins' preseason training camp in the fall of 1984 as the team's lasta free agent signee. He was assigned to Boston's minor league team in Hershey (PA.) for the start of the season. Just a few months later, he realized a childhood dream when the Bruins called him up to the parent club at Christmas and he remained in Boston for the rest of that season. Frank spent four years with the Bruins before retiring after blowing out his knee in the spring of 1988. He has since put his Norwich education to good use and is now the President of Data Engineering Services, Inc. Frank and his wife, Maria, reside in Stoneham, Massachusetts. They have a son, Nicholas, and a daughter, Christina.Ā
