Dr. Angelo Pappanikou was a four-year letterwinner in baseball who went on to enjoy an outstanding career in the medical field.

Angelo helped the baseball team win a school-record 11 games as a junior in the spring of 1959. He graduated from Norwich with a degree in biology one year later and went on to earn his master's degree in zoology from the University of New Hampshire in 1963. Angelo completed medical school in 1967, graduating cum laude from Albany Medical College.

Angelo began his residency as a surgical intern in Rochester, N.Y., but soon left to serve as a captain the Army Medical Corps from 1968-70 during the Vietnam War. He received the Army Commendation Medal for his service. Upon leaving the service in 1970, Angelo returned to finish his residency and began a career as both a teacher and surgeon.

Angelo lectured at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary and Mass. General Hospital while developing an outstanding reputation as a surgeon in the 1970's. By 1985, he had become the Senior Surgeon at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary and Chief of Otolaryngology at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. As an alumnus, Angelo always remained supportive of Norwich and specifically its athletic programs until the time of his death in July of 1993.
