A native of Gardiner, Maine, Gary Wehrwein was a standout on both the football field and the track earning All-State honors in football in 1963 and recording an undefeated season in track in 1965.

Of his time on the gridiron, Wehrwein especially remembers one game against Worcester Polytechnic Institute.  In that game, he broke off runs of 24 and 38 yards on respective touchdown drives with a broken rib and a broken thumb and added a two-point conversion on the team's second touchdown.

Wehrwein was a dominant force during his time on the track as well.  In 1965 he went undefeated in both the 100m and 220m individual distances.  He also ran the 440m individual and 440m relay as needed.

Wehrwein recalls one of the days he was asked to run on the relay.  "We were at a tri-meet, a gray day.  One of the guys on the relay wasn't feeling so well so I was asked to run anchor," he recalls.  "We won the race, but I was completely beat after that."

In the Corps Wehrwein attained the rain of captain, running the mess hall his senior year.  In the winter he also ran a concession stand, "Gary Wehrweinie's" that sold hot dogs at the men's hockey games.

Of his time at Norwich, Wehrwein says, "It was just an invaluable experience that was a major building block for the rest of my life."

Following his time at NU, Wehrwein went into the seminary.  He attended Andover Newton Theology School in Newton, Mass. before serving a parish in Londonderry, N.H. for eight years.  He then served asa pastor in Swanzey, N.H. for 11 years.

While in Swanzey, Wehrwein completed his doctorate of ministry and made the transition into counselor ministry.

Wehrwein is married to Tilar Abaurrea, with whom he has two grown sons, Jessen and Joshua.  The couple has four grandchildren.
