The first of two Distinguished Letter winner honorees was athree-sport athlete at NU, competing on the football, hockey andlacrosse teams. A rarity especially for collegiate athletics,Garvey played all three sports for all four years while atNorwich.

Lacrosse was arguably Garvey’s best sport as he was athree-year letter winner for the Cadets and served as a teamcaptain during his senior season in 1973 and finished as theteam’s leading scorer. He also earned the DistinguishedSenior Athlete Award.

“Playing three sports for four years really helped as arelease for everything else I had going on,” Garvey said.“It helped me be a kid again and compete within myself. Mostimportantly, it wouldn’t have happened without the influenceof my three coaches Wally Baines, Joe Sabol and Bob Priestly. Thedirection and leadership skills I acquired over my time is what theInstitution of Norwich is all about.”
After spending five years as an elementary health and physicaleducation teacher, Garvey was the head coach and general managerfor the Austin Mavericks of the United States Hockey League in1978-79. After his one-year stint in the USHL, Garvey returned toNorthfield, where he served as a graduate assistant coach forfootball and ice hockey. The following year he became the assistantvarsity hockey coach and served as the manager of TaylorArena.
Garvey also worked alongside former Philadelphia Flyers headcoach Fred Shero at the Fred Shero Hockey camps in the late70’s. For the last 16 years, Garvey has worked as a SalesManager with the Edon Corporation selling architecturalfiberglass.

He lives in Horsham, Pa. with his wife Laura. He also has twochildren, Jessie Garvey and Joe Garvey. Joe is married to his wife,Corrine Garvey and they just had their first child Liam.
