Dick Costin was a superb two-sport athlete at Norwich making his mark in football and baseball. He was one of the leaders of the 1951 football team which is in the hall of fame.
Dick was a four-year starter for the football team and one of its most versatile players. He played on both sides of the ball and rarely came out for e a break. As a running back on offense and a defensive back for the defense, Dick was an All-State selection at both positions during the 1951 season, That year, Norwich finished with a 6-2 record under new head coach Duke Benz. He was voted the team;s Most Valuable Player by his teammates.
As a member of the Newman Club, Spanish Club, Varsity Club, and SPE Fraternity, Dick was active in all phases of campus life. He received the Distinguished Military Student Award upon graduating in 1952. Dick was commissioned in the Regular Army in June of that year and was assigned to the 37th Infantry Division at Camp Polk, Louisiana. He was later assigned to the 14th Armored Cavalry division in Fulda, Germany where he served as company commander.Â
Upon returning to civilian life, Dick became active in local politics and served as secretary to the Mayor of Lynn, Mass., from 1957 to 1961. He also began working in real estate development during this time. In 1966, he built the first licensed hospital for the care and treatment of alcoholism. Since 1971, Dick has owned the Greenleaf Nursing Home in Salisbury, Massachusetts.Â
Dick and his wife Marcella have four children; Richard, Karen, Julie, and James.Â
