Mark Ryan was a standout on the Norwich fencing team, serving as a two-year captain in 1971 and 1972. He won a pair of New England Intercollegiate Tournament individual foil championships in his dominant four-year career for Norwich.

Ryan’s first individual foil championship came in 1968, becoming the first freshman to ever win the New England Intercollegiate Tournament individual foil title. He would go on to repeat the feat a second time in his junior year. Outside of athletics, Ryan served in the Corps of Cadets and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi.

After graduation, Ryan proceeded to enjoy a successful business career in the textile and clothing industry, serving as president of the Fruit of the Loom Division of Warnaco, and as part-owner of AAI Apparel in Manhattan, N.Y.

Upon retiring in 2014, Ryan moved to devoting his time to community service projects for his hometown of Trumbull, Conn., where he serves on the Committee on Aging and the Golf Committee for the Tashua Knolls Golf Course. He has also provided support to Bridgeport Hospital, participating in the Patient Family Advisory Council, the Shared Governance Committee, and the Committee for Security.

Ryan lives in Trumbull with his spouse, Joanne. They have three boys, Michael, Stephen, and David.
