Dr. Edgar R. Hyde became the third honorary member of the Athletic Hall of Fame. A 1936 graduate, of Dartmouth, who earned his medical degree at Cornell, "Doc" Hyde served as college and team physician at Norwich for thirty-eight years, receiving an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree of the University in 1983.
Dr. Hyde saw active duty as a captain with the 91st Evacuation Hospital in Europe during World War II, earning five battle stars and the Presidential Citation. Settling in Northfield after the war, he was co-founder of the Green Mountain Clinic, which he served as senior partner until 1983. He was also Northfield Health Officer for twenty-five years and Vermont State Medical Examiner for twenty and authored a weekly health column in the Northfield News.
Doc Hyde has been a member of several professional organizations, among them the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, and the Vermont State Medical Society. He served as Medical Advisor to the Committee on Health and Welfare in the Vermont House of Representatives and has been director of the Executive Committee and chairman of the Professional Committee of the VT/NH Blue Cross - Blue Shield since 1969.
Doc has been extremely active in community affairs, holding membership in the Northfield Rotary Club, the Norwich University Club, the Northfield Conversational Club, and the Northfield Beagle Club. In addition, he is a member of the Northfield United Church.
Among the honors Dr. Hyde has received are the Resolution of Appreciation from the Vermont State Legislature (1984), the Rotary Citizen of the Year (1984), and the National Ski Patrol Honorary Badge #1 for twenty-five years of caring for injured skiers and assisting in training members of the ski patrol.
At Norwich, Doc is remembered for his tireless service to generations of Cadet athletes and his lasting relationships with a multitude of students, coaches, trainers, and parents. Doc Hyde retired in 1983 and resides in Northfield with his wife, Margaret.
