Dist. Letterman Award - Ice Hockey

One of the two distinguished letterman honorees, he earned notoriety at Norwich on the ice. Murphy, who is recognized posthumously, was a member of the men’s hockey program from 1977-81.  He was captain of the 1981 team and was an outstanding leader both on the ice and in the Corps of Cadets. He played forward, taking a regular shift and playing the role of penalty killer, for head coaches Bob Priestley (1977-79) and Don Cahoon (1979-81).

"He loved it there," his brother, Greg, recollected of Stephen's experience at Norwich. "He bought into it all the way. After three years of prep school, I don't know if it was his first choice, but once he got there, he liked everything about it. The structure was really important to him, too. I remember, when we took him up there, you could really tell that."

"He loved sports, especially hockey," he added. "He had been playing since he was five. When he was named captain it was huge for him, because he was such great friends with the guys he played with."

Greg added that the Murphy family is honored by his late brother's Hall of Fame induction. "After all these years, to be considered for such an award, is very touching," he said. "It means a lot that the college still thinks so much of Stephen."
