A multi-year letter-winner in field hockey, softball, and basketball as an undergraduate at Norwich, Karen Perry was one of the school's first outstanding female athletes.Â
Karen came to Norwich in the fall of 1976. Women's athletics at the school were in their infancy at the time of her arrival. She joined the new field hockey team in her first year and participated in the first women's intercollegiate athletic contetst ever played at Norwich.
Karen would become a four-year starter for the Cadets. SHe was named to the New England College Field Hockey Association (NECFHA) All-Star team following her sophomore season. She led the Cadets to a 9-3-2 record as a junior and served as the team's co-captain in her senior yea. Karen also was the team's college representative to the NECFHA in her final three seasons.
Karen was also a four-year starter for the Cadet softball team. She hit .355 with 7 RBI in her first season as NU posted a 5-4-1 record. She went on the become the team co-captain in her junior and senior years.
In addition to playing field hockey and softball, Karen was a member of the women's basketball team during her first two years at Norwich. The Cadets posted winning records in each of those seasons and Karen was named the team's most valuable player in her first year.Â
Karen also found time to participate in other extra-curricular activities as well. She was a member of both the Ring Committee and the Physical Education Majors Club while maintaining her standing on the Dean's List. She also worked as a coach for the Special Olympics during the winter and spring of each of her four years.
After graduating from Norwich in 1980 with a degree in physical education, Karen went on to a career as a teacher and coach at her high school alma mater in Gardiner, Maine. A math teacher at Gardiner High School, Karen has coached softball, field hockey, and track at the school. She currently resides in Augusta, Maine.Â
