Hall of Fame
Bradford J. Sibley was an extremely talented, multi-dimensional athlete who starred at Norwich in both football and hockey. In his senior year, Brad became one of the distinguished few at Norwich to be named captain of two varsity sports in the same year, when he was named captain of the hockey team and co-captain of the football team.Â
On the gridiron, Brad helped turn an ineffective program into one of the strongest in New England. In his freshman year, the Cadets were 2-4. Over the next three seasons, this outstanding lineman, who played both offense and defense, and team leader led Norwich to 5-2, 7-1, and 6-2 seasons. In his junior and senior years, Brad led Norwich to consecutive Vermont State Championships, including 38-7 and 34-0 wins over arch rival Middlebury College. These were the last glory days of Norwich football until the great 1951 returned the Cadet program to a prestigious level. Brad was also a prolific scorer as a right wing on the Norwich Hockey team, leading his teammates in scoring during his junior and senior seasons. Never one to be found far from athletic competition, Brad was also active in intramural sports and was President of the Golf Association.Â
Brad was awarded both the Theta Chi Athletic Award and the Athletic Council Trophy in 1941. His outstanding achievements, however, transcended the athletic arena into civics and the classroom, where his fellow cadets held him in such high esteem that he was elected Class Treasurer as a sophomore and held that position for three years. He achieved the ranks of Corporal, Sergeant, and 2nd Lieutenant in the Cadet Corps. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1941.Â
Brad entered the navy after graduation and served as a Lieutenant J.G. on two U.S. naval vessel, the USS Harry Lee and the USS Rigel, in the New Guinea and Philippine campaigns during World War Two. He was awarded two battle stars during the Philippine campaign.
After the war, Brad joined Bethlehem Steel's Shipbuilding Division where he was involved in the construction of new ships and ship repair. He worked his way ip to sales engineer for shipbuilding and became a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the Propeller Club of North America and the Kiwanis Club. He retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1990 after a distinguished forty-year career.
Brad and his late wife Mildred have four sons; Brad Jr., Grant, John and Brian, and one daughter, Dale Anne. Brad currently resides in Allentown, Pennsylvania.Â
