Mark Sturman was an extremely talented, multi-dimensional athlete starring in soccer and baseball at Norwich.
Mark played four seasons for the baseball team, earning the maximum three letters. He was considered one of the best catches in New England and earned Vermont All-State honors as a senior. That year, he captained the team to a 9-3 record. Norwich registered a perfect 5-0 mark against Middlebury, St. Michael's, and the University of Vermont to win the Vermont State Championship.
Mark was also an important part of three successful men's soccer teams at Norwich. He earned his first varsity letter for the 1964 soccer team which went to the Eastern College Athletic Conference tournament after posting a 7-1 record. Two years later Mark helped the 1966 squad win a share of the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League Championship with a 7-1-1 mark. In all, Norwich won more than 78 percent of its men's soccer games in the three seasons that Mark earned letters.
Mark graduated with a degree in economics in 1967 and returned to Norwich that fall to coach the freshman soccer team. He stayed on to coach the freshman baseball team and assisted with the varsity squad.
Mark served two years active duty as a personnel officer at Fort Meade and then as a combat experimentation office at Fort Ord before returning to civilian life. Today he is the vice-president of the sales for Der-Tex Corporation, a company which makes material for the shoewear industry.
Mark and his wife, Kathy, reside in Kennebunkport, Maine. They have two sons; Todd and Greg.
