Tony Adams, longtime sportscaster at WCAX-TV in Burlington, VT., is a sports broadcasting pioneer.
Tony worked 35 years at WCAX, beginning with the stations's inception in 1954 and continuing until his retirement in May of 1989. He became best known through his 15-minute sports report seen Monday through Friday night. He has interviewed some of sports living legends including Carl Yastrzemski, Sugar Ray Leonard, Arnold Palmer, Jimmy Connors, Dean Smith, George Brett, and Pete Rose.
A past recipient of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Media Award, Tony has earned the most respect from athletic directors, college coaches, and sports information directors for his contributions to college athletics.
Tony was the leader in covering a wide range of collegiate sporting events in Vermont during his career. He did play-by-play for UVM football and basketball through the 60's and 70's, and later served as radio play-by-play man for Dartmouth College football from 1973-84. In addition, he has broadcast college hockey, Norwich-Middlebury football, and the annual Shrine Football Classic between Vermont and New Hampshire. Tony still broadcasts St. Michael's College basketball today and he remains an important part of the WCAX sports team.
"Tony has so much experience in covering sports in Vermont that we would be crazy not to use his knowledge," said J.J. Cioiffi, who replaced Tony as sports anchor at WCAX in 1989. "His contributions to college athletics in the state of Vermont are immeasurable."
Tony, who is a widower, has two children; Stephanie and Anthony.
