Wally Burke is one of the great goaltenders in Norwich history as he finished his career with a school record 16 shutouts. Also during his three years in goal, Burke made 325 saves and posted a 1.1 goals-against-average, while the Cadets went 28-13-2 and earned an ECAC Playoff berth. However, Burke's career got off to a slow start.
As a freshman, he was unable to play because of a broken wrist. As a sophomore, Coach Tony Mariano was in need of a goalie to replace the graduated Bill Kolalkowski. Mariano received word of Burke and a tryout was held. A few games into the season, Burke was named the starting goalie and remained in net for every minute of every game through his senior season. Also, during his final year, Burke served as co-captain.
Burke also played on the Norwich Lacrosse team for two years, playing midfielder. The star of the NU Lacrosse team, at the time, was fellow Norwich Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Bob Anderson.
As a member of the NU Corps of Cadets, Burke achieved the rank of cadet major and was a member of the Corps Honor Committee as well as Skill & Swords. Burle graduated with a degree in business administration.
