Sterling Melendy was a four-sport standout in baseball, hockey, football, and golf during an outstanding athletic career at Norwich University.Â
A member of the class of '46, Sterling was stationed in the South Pacific with the Army Corps Engineers for three years during World War II. He came to Norwich following the war and immediately made his mark as an athlete.Â
Sterling earned a total of 10 varsity letters at Norwich. He was a three-time letterwinner in hockey and baseball, and earned two letters in football and golf.Â
As a senior,, Sterling became the first man ever at Norwich to captain three varsity sports teams in the same year. He led the golf, hockey, and baseball teams that year and was also a member of Skull and Swords. He received the Senior Honor Trophy for his accomplishments.
Sterling's ability on the baseball diamond did not go unnoticed by the Boston Braves, who contacted him about playing professional baseball. Sterling played semi-pro baseball for a short time, but decided against pursuing a pro career. He returned to Norwich to coach the hockey team during the 1949-50 season.Â
A few years later, Sterling started the Harrison Insurance Agency which he ran as president for 32 years. He was involved with many civic organizations in that time including the Red Cross, Lyons Club, and American Legion. Sterling also served as President of the Lebanon, N.H., Outing Board and was a member of the Lebanon School Board. Among the most distinctive honors, Sterling was named Citizen of the Year by the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce in the spring of 1985 following his death in November of 1984.Â
Sterling is survived by his wife, Barbara, and their children; Peter, Mark, and Karen.
