    Athletic Director, Educator, Coach
There isn't much one can say about Joe Sabol that people close to Norwich University athletics haven't heard before. Joe has been one of the most recognized and popular figures on the Vermont collegiate sports scene for more than three decades. He is widely respected by those who have had the pleasure of working with him as players, assistant coaches, opposing coaches, and colleagues.
Joe's athletic career was highly celebrated. He was an All-American football player at Penn State in 1957. In his senior year he was named team captain and was invited to play in the North-South Shrine Game in Miami, Florida.
Joe coached high school football in Pennsylvania for two years before returning to school to earn his master's degree in education at Bucknell University in 1962. He came to Norwich as an assistant football coach in 1963. By 1965 he was promoted to head coach and proceeded to lead Norwich football teams to some of the finest records in the school's history.
Many of the new programs and athletic facilities at Norwich were started during Joe's tenure as athletic director. He planned and supervised the construction of the outdoor track complex, the renovation of Plumley Armory, the construction of Andrews Gymnasium, the cross-country ski trail, the wrestling room, the weight room and Shapiro Field House. He has also received a number of honors and awards, including the Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Service Award in 1975. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.
Joe retired last spring after 29 years of service at Norwich. He is enjoying his free time with his wife, Ruth, and sons, Steve and Scott.
