Fernand L. Cloutier is among the outstanding players in the proud tradition of Norwich Hockey. A four-year forward for the Cadets, he stands third on NU's all-time scoring list, with 104 goals and 77 assists for 181 points. He never missed a game and accumulated his 181 points in just 59 contests for an average of 3.07 points per game, by far the best scoring average in NU history (the late Hall of Famer John Kennedy, '63, is second at 2.5). Only all-time leading scorer and Hall of Famer Cam McGregor ('76) has more goals (108 in 98 games). Fern was the mainstay on several excellent teams under Coach Bob Priestley (an honorary Hall of Famer). In huis four years, the Cadet composite mark was 43-15-1 (.741). Known for his hard, accurate shot and stick-handling and play-making abilities, Fern was named All-New England three times. IN his sophomore year (1952-53), the 11-2-1 Cadets captured the Sands Trophy as the winners of the old New England League, which at the time included Boston University Boston College.

As an undergraduate, Fern was the vice-president of Sigma  Phi Wpsilon and was the business manager for the Pegasus Players. After graduation, he served for two years in the 30th Signal Battalion, XIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, NC. A first lieutenant, he spent one of those years as an instructor of Physical Education at the NCA Academy. Upon returning to civilian life, Fern took over the family business, Twin City Packing, Inc. (Lewiston-Auburn, ME) and operated it until 1978. He was also the owner/operator of the Lafayette Motor Lodge in Old Orchard Beach, ME until 1984 and is currently the Director of the Central Maine Youth Center.

Fern is extremely active in youth hockey, having coached a bantam team in the Lewiston-Aurburn Youth Hockey League for fifteen years, serving as league president in 1971 Fern also organized the Lion's Youth Hockey Tournament in Lewiston, now in its eighteenth year. In addition, he served his community as Director of Lewiston Public Housing for three years and as Director of the Lewiston Club Scout Program for six years.
Fern and his wife, Lorraine, are the parents of eight children. Their five sons - Daniel (NU '799), David, Richard, Gregory, and Fernand II (NU '93) - and three daughters - Patricia, Lise, and Celeste - are all college-educated. The Cloutiers reside in Fern's native Lewiston.
