NCAA athletes now have the opportunity to benefit financially from their name, image, and likeness. These guidelines provide student-athletes with important information on the policies and procedures that must be followed in order to be in compliance with this NCAA legislation.
Permissible Activities
It is permissible for currently enrolled Norwich University student-athletes to benefit from the use of their name, image, and likeness (NIL), provided the compensation received is commensurate with the market and does not violate NCAA or Norwich University policy. Compensation may be in the form of cash, product, or receipt of other benefits. Subject to the restricted categories list below, examples of permissible activities include:
- Personal business activities
- Advertising, promotion, endorsement and/or sponsorship of products and services
- Camps, clinics, or private instruction
- Autographs or other personal memorabilia
- Personal appearances
- Social media activity
Impermissible Activities
The following activities are considered violations of Norwich University and Athletics policies, and/or NCAA rules governing pay for play, recruiting inducements, or extra benefits:
- NIL compensation based solely on the use of Norwich University's name or other intellectual property.
- NIL compensation provided or offered that is contingent on initial or continued enrollment at Norwich University.
- NIL compensation contingent on specific athletic performance or achievement (e.g. financial incentives based on points scored).
- NIL compensation arranged or facilitated in any way by a Norwich employee, including volunteer coaches. Employees also may not serve as advisors.
- Activities that would be considered a violation of Norwich Student and Student-Athlete Codes of Conduct.
- Use of NIL to promote or benefit from businesses, products, or services that conflict with Norwich sponsorships.
Restricted Categories
The following categories of products and services may be restricted. Norwich University may reject NIL relationships intended to promote, sponsor, or endorse entities, services, or products in these areas:
- Gambling
- Alcohol, tobacco, or other substances banned by the NCAA or Norwich University
- Adult and sexually oriented entertainment
- Weapons
Obligation to Disclose
Prior to entering into any NIL agreement, student-athletes are required to disclose their activities by completing an NIL Disclosure Form, either online or located in the Director of Athletics' office. This applies to written or verbal agreements, as well as fee-for-service work.
Norwich Athletics will review submissions for compliance with these guidelines, but in no way should be considered a substitute for legal or business advice from a qualified and independently sourced advisor.
Failure to disclose activities in a timely manner may be considered a violation of the University's Student Code of Conduct. Additionally, where activities are not properly disclosed, student-athletes face a greater risk of running afoul of both Norwich University policy and NCAA rules, should the activities be deemed impermissible.

Additional Considerations
- Student-athletes may not use institutional marks, logos, or other intellectual property, such as photographs or video without prior approval.
- NIL activities may affect the visa status of international student-athletes. Please consult Thy Yang, Assistant Vice President for International Education, before proceeding.
- Student-athletes may use a professional service provider (i.e. agent) for NIL activities but must follow NCAA agent rules.
- Use of Norwich facilities for NIL activity requires prior approval.
