Norwich University Athletic Hall of Fame

Established in 1983 by President W. Russell Todd and Athletic Director Joseph Sabol, the Norwich University Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes alumni-athletes, coaches, teams, and contributors who have made a lasting impact on Norwich Athletics and their broader communities.

Purpose

The Hall of Fame exists to recognize and honor:

  • Outstanding student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through athletic achievement and post-collegiate impact.
  • Individuals who have contributed significantly to the development of Norwich athletes or athletic programs.
  • Teams whose success has created a legacy of excellence, leadership, and sportsmanship.
Membership Categories
  • Regular Membership – For Norwich alumni who have achieved excellence in athletics and made distinguished contributions beyond the University.
  • Honorary Membership – For individuals who have made lasting contributions to the success of Norwich Athletics or its student-athletes.
  • Distinguished Letterwinner Award – For former varsity athletes who have demonstrated post-graduate excellence in their profession or public life.
  • Memorial Membership – Posthumous recognition for student-athletes who passed away before graduation but left a meaningful impact.
  • Team Membership – For teams that demonstrated outstanding success and embodied the values of the University.
Criteria for Selection
  • Athletic accomplishments, including individual awards, records, and team contributions.
  • Leadership, sportsmanship, and alignment with the University's core values: character, courage, and service.
  • Post-graduate success and contributions to profession, community, or country (for individual categories).
  • Significant and lasting impact on Norwich Athletics (for coaches, administrators, or contributors).
  • Historical significance and collective success (for team categories).
Nomination & Selection Process

Nominations are accepted annually between October 1 and February 1. All nominees must be at least ten years removed from graduation or competition (except Honorary Membership).

Anyone from the Norwich community—including alumni, faculty, staff, and current Hall of Fame committee members—may submit a nomination with supporting documentation.

Selection Criteria

The Selection Committee evaluates nominees based on:

  • Athletic achievement and post-graduate distinction
  • Embodiment of Norwich values: character, courage, leadership
  • Up to 10 individuals and 2 teams may be selected annually
  • Milestone reunion years (10th, 15th, 20th, etc.) receive priority
Induction Ceremony

Inductions are held during Homecoming Weekend each fall. New members are honored with a commemorative award and featured in the banquet program and Digital Hall of Fame.

Inductees (or a representative) are invited to speak. Teams designate one speaker to represent the group.
