David Fernandez is one of the finest marksmen ever to compete for a Norwich University rifle team. He excelled in target shooting from the age of nine and went on to led the Norwich rifle team to some of its finest seasons ever.
As a freshman, David won the New England College Rifle League individual championship while leading the Cadets to their first New England sectional championship in seven years. He finished as high shooter in the league that year and earned first position on the leagues eight man All-Star team.
After placing second in the league championships as a sophomore, David was named to the NRA All-American Intercollegiate Rifle team as a junior. That year he set several league and school scoring records while winning two national intercollegiate matches as well as a Massachusetts state open championship.
David competed in the Massachusetts competition only at the urging of John Moare, the rifle coach at M.T.T. By convincing him to compete in that event, Moare cost himself the state championship as David edged him out by a fraction of a point.
David was invited to participate in the United States Olympic trials following his outstanding junior season. He finished near the middle of the pack while competing against the finest marksmen in the country AS a senior, he captained the Norwich rifle team which defeated the University of Maine to win the New England sectionals for the fourth straight year.
A native of Northfield, David won the Vermont sub-junior title at age 13 and was the junior state rifle champion during all four of his years at Northfield High School. He is currently in partnership with his brother, Ray, at ACE Hardware and Sporting Goods in Northfield.
