A three-sports athlete at Norwich, John Daley became one of the most respected public officials in Vermont history. At Norwich, John played football,basketball and golf. He was named to the All-State Basketball Team in1942 and was the Burlington Free Press Athlete of the Year in 1949. John received his bachelor's degree in education. A native Rutland, John served as a United States Marine during World War II in the American invasion of Okinawa and later in China. He began his political career in 1956 as a member of the Rutland City Board of Alderman, on which he served for two years as the board's president. In 1961, he was elected mayor of the city of Rutland, where he served until 1965 and again from 1969 through 1981. From 1965 to 1969, he presided over the Vermont Senate as Lieutenant Governor. He also served 12 years as a social studies teacher at Rutland Junior High School before returning to the Statehouse for two terms as a member of the House of Representatives. John was active in many fraternal organizations, including the Elks, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. From 1992 to 1996, John remained closely associated with Norwich University, serving on the university's alumni bored. John is survived by his wif of 53 years, Mary. They have nine daughters, Patricia, Linda, Judy, Suzanne, Mary Jane, Mureen, Lisa, Sharon and the late Nancy, two sons, Michael and James (Norwich '79).
