The Class of 2020’s honorary inductee served for 28 years as Norwich University’s 23rd president, and is the first president to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Schneider concluded his nearly three-decade tenure as the longest-serving president in Norwich University’s 202-year history on May 31, 2020. Under Schneider’s leadership, Norwich added five new varsity sports — women’s ice hockey, lacrosse, and volleyball and men’s and women’s rugby.

Norwich won 12 national championships during Schneider’s tenure, including its first ever in 2000 with the men’s ice hockey team. The men’s hockey program has gone on to win three additional national titles, while women’s hockey has won two, and the women’s rugby program has claimed six national championship titles.

In 1993, Schneider successfully integrated the civilian students and programs of Vermont College in Montpelier with the Corps of Cadets at the Northfield, Vt. campus. In 1997, Norwich launched its online graduate program known today as the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies.

Schneider led three separate capital campaigns that raised over $220 million, including the most recent, bicentennial campaign which exceeded $120 million. These funds have been used to enhance academic programs and scholarships, as well as to add brick and mortar improvements to the campus.

Since 1992, Norwich has seen the construction of Kreitzberg Library, Kreitzberg Arena, the engineering, math and science complex, Bartoletto Hall, Sullivan Museum and History Center, Wise Campus Center, South Hall civilian dormitory, Doyle Hall athletic complex connector, Shaw Outdoor Center, the wood chip biomass plant, Haynes Family Stadium, the renovation of Sabine Field, the completion of the second civilian dormitory, Dalrymple Hall, and the construction of Mack Hall.

A native of Queens, New York, Schneider is a 1968 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He was commissioned as an ensign in the Coast Guard and served eight years of active duty, including a tour of Vietnam. Schneider retired from the Coast Guard Reserve as a Rear Admiral in July 1998.

Schneider lives in Leicester, Vt. on Lake Dunmore with his wife, Jaime. During his spare time, he enjoys being with his 15 grandchildren.
