Geoff Hensley is one of the most accomplished men’s basketball players in the rich history of the program. He led the Cadets to back-to-back Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament titles in 2005 and 2006. Norwich won 21 games in each of those two seasons, a program record which still stands as the most wins in a single season.
Hensley was a four-year starter and two-year captain for head men’s basketball coach Paul Booth. He made an immediate impact on the program during his freshman season, helping lead NU to a 14-11 record and a GNAC Semifinals appearance. Hensley earned GNAC Rookie of the Year honors and was also named to the GNAC All-Conference Third Team as a rookie.
Hensley went on to score more than 1,000-career points and was named to the GNAC All-Conference First Team three years in a row. During his senior season, he finished 11th in three-point percentage and 10th in free throw percentage in the country.
Hensley still holds career program records for three-point field goals made (291), assists (472), and free-throw percentage (.872). He also holds three single-season program records for the same three categories.
“I always believed anybody could do anything they want in life if you put in the time, the work and the energy,” Hensley said. “We achieved so much success during our four years because our players and coaches believed in that and believed in each other. I will always be thankful and appreciative for Coach Booth and Norwich University for giving ‘some kid from Ohio’ the chance and the opportunity to come here and live out his childhood dream. Keep working, keep fighting, persevere through the ups and downs until the job is finished. Dream big.”
After graduating from Norwich, Hensley served four years as an officer in the US Navy, stationed on the USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) in Yokosuka, Japan and the USS Doyle (FFG 39) in Mayport, Fla.
After the Navy, Hensley returned to college basketball as a coach. He served as an Assistant Coach at Springfield College for two years, where he received his Master of Education in Athletic Administration. He went on to serve as an assistant coach at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky for two years, and then as head men’s basketball coach Thomas College in Waterville, Maine. At Thomas College. Hensley led the Terriers to a 55-52 record, including a 2017 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship game berth. In June 2018, he accepted the head men’s basketball coach position at Pennsylvania College of Technology. He lives in Williamsport, Pa. with his son, Jaxson.
