Gary Atwood has become a fixture at Norwich University during his 40+ years of service to the school, and is one of the most well-known people around campus.Â
Gary started working at Norwich in 1958 in the college store and snack bar. He later moved to athletics where he became the schools's first ever equipment manager. He worked in athletics for 15 years starting when all of the teams were still housed in Plumley Armory. He later left to serve as the ski area manager and grounds superintendent, where he served for many years.Â
While in athletics, Gary worked closely with the entire coaching staff including people like Joe Sabol and Ed Hockenbury Sr., two of his closest friends during his time at Norwich. It was during that time that he started a tradition of betting Sabol each year about the record of the football team. "We used to bet a dollar a year and I never lost," according to Gary. "But Joe never paid me."Â Â Gary is widely known for imparting his critiques of athletic team performances every Monday morning following a busy weekend of action. He enjoys the opportunity to banter with various head coaches regarding the successes and failures of their respective teams.Â
Most importantly, Gary oversees a crew which, among many things, is responsible for making sure all of the school's athletic fields and facilities are in excellent condition. Norwich enjoys some of the finest athletic facilities anywhere in Division III athletics thanks in large part to the work of Gary and his staff. Â
