Though basketball was her favorite sport, Mary Clouatre Mason played a total of three sports for Norwich; basketball, field hockey, and track. Captain of the basketball team for three years, she was a four year letter winner in the same sport. mason was also a three year letter winner in field hockey and a two year letter winner in track. In 1981 her track skills qualified her for New England Championship in discus. A civilian student, Mason graduated eighth in her class and was a member of the Honor Society Epsilon Tai Sigma.
After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Physical Education, Mason received a Master of Education from Norwich in 1983. Originally from the Burlington, Vermont area, she moved to New Jersey where a Norwich connection landed her a job as manager of a newly opened residential health care facility for the mentally ill.
Though her initial career plans did not include keeping the job long term, she remained the manager of Meadowview Care Center for 24 years until it was sold this past May. "My work in residential health care gave me the opportunity to service a population in need," Mason said. "The personal interaction with both residents and owners deepened my commitment and added intangible benefit that kept me going back for 24 years." Mason plans to start a new career in education after updating her teaching license with a few classes.
Mason lives in Jackson, New Jersey with husband, Paul and their two daughters, Samantha and Stephanie. Paul's expertise and career in home improvement contracting lead her to learn new skills as the couple restored their 100 year-old farmhouse. Mason notes, "It's something I am very proud of and something that truly feels like home."
Continuing her interest in sports after Norwich, Mason has participated in soccer, softball, and volleyball. She now also coaches girls' basketball for thr traveling team of her daughter Stephanie.
