Guido Verdelli is Norwich's first and only men's soccer All-American. He played a key role in helping the Cadet men's soccer program reach an unprecedented level of success in his four years at Norwich.
Guido played center forward as a freshman and led Norwich in scoring. He was named the team's Rookie of the Year as he helped the Cadets to ann 8-6-1 record, tying the school mark for most wins in a season. Verdelli moved to center midfielder for his sophomore campaign. The transition was a smooth one as he was an All-New England selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). NU posted a 7-6-2 record that season, its fourth consecutive season above .500.
The Cadets went even further the following year. With Guido serving as co-captain, NU ended the regular season with a school-best 11-3-1 record. He finished the season as the team's second leading scorer as Norwich earned its first trip to postseason play in 19 years. Norwich eventually lost to Salem State, 2-0, in the first round of the ECAC tournament to close at 11-4-1, but Guido was honored by the NSCAA as the school's first men's soccer All-American.
Norwich matched its 11-4-1 record of the previous year in Guido's final season. He moved to sweeper, his fourth position in four years, and anchored a defense which allowed just 12 goals in the team's 16 games. Verdelli was named to the All0New England Team by the NSCAA for the third consecutive year. In all, the Cadet men's soccer team compiled a record of 37-20-5 in Guido's four years as a player. He is considered to be the best men's soccer player ever to play at Norwich.
Guido graduated in 1985 with a recreation degree. He went on to earn his master's degree in physical education and administration from Norwich in 1986. Guido got into coaching for a short time after graduation. He coached soccer for one season at Suffolk University and then coached three years at Natick High School. Two years ago, Guido took control of the daily operations of Verdelli, Inc., a landscape construction company originally run by his father. Guido and his wife, Cindy, live in Natick. They have a daughter, Gemma, 2, and are expecting their second child in October.Â
