Eduardo Hernandez has been involved with Norwich athletics for over 30 years. He graduated from Norwich in 1972 with a bachelor of science degree in Physical Education, and returned to Norwich to earn a master’s degree in education in 1976. He ran track for four years as an undergraduate. He joined the staff at Norwich in 1979 and has worked at the University ever since, beginning as a physical education instructor, assistant trainer, and swim coach in 1979. While his coaching stint lasted just one season, Hernandez continued as an instructor and assistant athletic trainer until he was named head trainer in 1985. He served in that capacity until 1992. He served as the physical education department chair from 1987 through 1990. In 1992, he became a full-time faculty member, and was selected as division head for math and sciences in 2000. In this new role he also serves as the program director for sports medicine, and has kept involved with athletics by continuing to assist in the athletic training program for home football games and other busy sports weekends. A fixture at a NU athletic events for the past 20 years, Hernandez has seen an untold number of Norwich sporting events and been on “a lot of bus rides and eaten a lot of box lunches.” Born in Cuba, Hernandez came to the United States at age 12, settling with his family in New York City. He served three years in the US Army after graduation, and three more years in the Army Reserve. He also spent three years at the University of New Hampshire as an assistant athletic trainer prior to his return to Norwich. Hernandez was a founding member and the first president of the Vermont Athletic Trainers Association. Ed, and his wife, Carol, have two children, a son, Ian, and a daughter, Gillian.
