Dennis Gareau literally took long way to Norwich University, but the trek was well worth it, as his name appears multiple times in the record books. Originally from Winter Park, FL., he played at Texas El Paso before transferring to Norwich where he played for three seasons and set four rushing records: most carries in a game (48), most carries in season (278), most yards in a game (300 vs. Middlebury), and most yards in a season(1,481).
The game against Middlebury is one of Gareau's two favorite games. After rushing for 300 yards, Andy Gardner of the Burlington Free Press described Gareau as "... a human battering ram. He pounded. He crashed. He slammed away with relentless fury against a Middlebury College defense that was stacked to stop his every move."
Panther head coach Micky Heinecken told the Free Press that day," I usually don't single out an individual after a game, but I made sure I paid my respect to Gareau. No back has ever done what he did to us. He's out our league."
Gareau's other favorite games occurred during his senior year when he scored three times in under seven minutes as the Cadets rolled over WPI, 27-13. Gareau finished that game with season high 163 yards on 27 carries.
Gareau finished second in nation the nation in NCAA Division III rushing and was named to the Pizza Hut All American team. He was the winter of the Gold Helmet Award and was the Cadets player of the year was well as NU's MVP on the offense. He also made the ECAC Honor Roll five times.
Gareua graduated with a BS in physical education, and then went to Northeastern University to pursue a graduate degree in physical therapy and a career as an athletic trainer. He eventually left physical therapy for medical sales. For the last 14 years, he has served as the southwest regional manager for Joint Active Systems.
Gareau and his wife, Michelle Maxham Gareau, have been married for seven years and have six year old son, Austin. Michelle is from Bidgewater, Vt. and was a nursing student at Norwich University. They reside in Rockland, Ma.
