In her time at Norwich, Carolyn Cunniff was a dean's list student, secretary of the junior class, a staff Sergeant in the Corps of Cadets, and a member of both the Spirit Club and the Outing Club. While that may have been more than enough to keep most people busy, Carolyn also managed to compete successfully as a member of the cross-country, skiing, and outdoor track teams.
Carolyn excelled no matter what the season, but the fall was truly her time to shine. She burst onto the cross-country racing scene in the autumn of her first year at Norwich by earning All-New England honors for the Cadet harriers. Cunnifff repeated that feat a year later, finishing 12th in a field of 224 runners at the New England Cross Country Championships. Later in her sophomore year, she went on to win the Vermont Collegiate title in the 1500 meter event as a member of the spring track team.
Carolyn's success had her earning national recognition by her junior year. She won four races that fall including the Vermont State and ECAC Championships. She took second place at the Northeast Regionals and became Norwich's first ever female All-American with her 15th place finish at the NCAA National Championships. In November of 1982, she was selected by the Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association ast hte Vermont Athlete of the Month.
Cunniff's success continued in her final year at Norwich. As captain of the Cadet Cross-Country team, she finished 11th in a field of 204 runners from divisions I, II, and III at the New England Championships. She would later earn All-American honors for the second time after placing 16th in a field of 115 runners at the NCAA national event.
Carolyn has remained active in road racing, whenever possible, since graduating from Norwich in 1984 with a degree in physical education. She and her husband, James, now live in Quincy, Massachusetts, with their one and a half year old son, Jake.
