Mathewson was a cornerstone of the NU men’s ice hockey team’s blue line for four seasons in the early 1970’s. Norwich won 13 or more games in three of his seasons and he established a new program scoring record at the time for defensemen with 21 goals and 63 assists for 84 points. He also played in 100 consecutive games, which was a new Norwich record at the time. Mathewson also played two years on the golf team.

“I came to Norwich at 17 years old and I had no clue whether I would make the team or not and I kept questioning myself whether I was going to be good enough to play at this level,” he said. “I was pretty excited that Coach Bob Priestley gave me a chance and I got plenty of ice time. One of my favorite memories was that we won our last game against Middlebury as a senior and finished with a 5-2-2 record against them during my four years.”

After graduating from Norwich, Mathewson played professional hockey in Europe for three years and then returned to the United States to play with NU teammates Lou DiMasi and Cam MacGregor. He then went on to sell medical supplies for Abbott Labs for 12 years and was a Regional Vice President for Horse Racing Television. He continues to coach hockey at Simsbury High School, serving as the head coach and now the assistant coach over the last 30 years.

Mathewson is married to his wife Susan and has three children; David, Stephanie and Julie. He lives in Simsbury, Conn.
