George R. Turner becomes the second honorary member of the athletic Hall of Fame. George graduated from Dartmouth College in 1947 with a degree in English and several letters in baseball and did subsequent graduate work at Fitchburg State and at Teachers College, Columbia University. He served as Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy during World War II, seeing action on destroyers in the North Atlantic and in the invasions of North africa, Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio. He was later recalled during the Korean War, serving as company commander of recruits at the naval Training Station in Great Lakes, Illinois. His career as an English teacher began at West Point Prep, where he coached baseball, a dual role he later filled in Lago High School in Aruba, working for the Esso Corporation. George arrived at Norwich in 1959 as a member of the English faculty. In 1969, he was appointed Director of Public Relations and Sports Information. He has watched the cadet athletic program expand considerably and has played the major role in publicizing that expansion. His Sports Bulletin and award winning NU football programs (voted best in the nation in NCAA Div. III in 1981) have been pacesetters in New England sports information circles. Having published sixteen English textbooks on writing, spelling and vocabulary development that are now in use in elementary and secondary schools throughout the United States and abroad, George returned on a full-time basis to the English Department last fall when he was named Professor of English. George also received the ECAC Appreciation Award and the Board of Fellows medallion during the past year. He and his wife Anne, Head Librarian at Norwich, reside in Northfield.
