The 1969-70 football team put together one of the finest defensive seasons in Norwich University history en route to a 6-2 overall record. The Cadets defeated AIC, Coast Guard, St. Lawrence, Bates, Middlebury and WPI.
Norwich broke the record at the time for most yards gained rushing in a season. The vaunted Norwich defense finished second in the country in yards allowed per game and gave up just 65 points the entire season, which ranked sixth in the country. The rushing defense ranked sixth in the country, allowing just 54.4 yards per game.
The team finished as the No. 4 ranked team in the final Lambert Bowl Rankings, which ranked the top college-division teams in the East at the time.
Halfback George Kulhowvick starred for the Cadets' offense, rushing for 15 touchdowns, setting a single-season record at the time and still ranks as one of the best individual seasons in program history. Kulhowvick scored 16 total touchdowns and accounted for 96 points, which led all New England college-division players.
Carl Holden set and still is tied for the single-game record for most successful point-after-attempts with eight vs. WPI. His 20 successful PATs were the most in a single season at the time. Joseph Cottone, Michael Iadarola, and Grant McLean each scored two touchdowns as well.
Cottone accounted for 24 points on the season with four successful field goals to go along with his two touchdowns. Richard Knight was Norwich's top receiving threat, compiling 347 yards and one touchdown.
"We will graduate the best group of football players that I ever had the privilege of being associated with," said Norwich head coach Joe Sabol in a press release after the season. "They make up the heart of this team. Our co-captains, Grant McLean and Terry Stecker are two of the finest leaders a coach would want."
