BRISTOL, R.I. – Norwich University battled to a ninth-place team finish at the Roger Williams Invitational Nov. 12.
The Cadets were guided by a sixth-place finish from junior 165-pounder Abe Bray (Gold Bar, Wash.) and a sixth-place mark from sophomore heavyweight Anthony Joyce (Lincoln, R.I.). Bray reached the championship semifinals before dropping a 4-1 decision to eventual runner-up Lucas Taylor of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Joyce, after an early round loss on the championship side, rolled up four straight wins in the wrestlebacks to make the consolation semifinals. He eventually took fifth.
Coach John Hartupee's squad also had two others, freshman 125-pounder Alex Stewart (Ellicott City, Md.) and sophomore 174-pounder Charles Constantino (South Ridding, Va.), make it to the championship quarterfinals. NU ended the tournament with 48 pts.
Norwich opens its 2011-12 dual slate with a trip to Plymouth State Wednesday, Nov. 16. Match time is 7 p.m.
