The New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) announced its end-of-year honors earlier this week, and several members of the Norwich Wrestling team received recognition.
Two Cadets were given All-Conference Honorable Mentions in senior
Jabari Pinkney (Jessup, Md.) at 125 pounds and freshman
Tyler Russ (Freehold, N.J.) at 157 pounds. Both competitors earned podium finishes at NCAA Northeast Regionals in March.
Pinkney's eighth-place finish at regionals capped off an impressive career in maroon and gold. He entered the season ranked sixth in Region 1 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and would have a senior campaign highlighted by a first-place finish at the Williams Open, second at the Roger Williams Invitational, and fifth at the RIT Invitational.
Russ finished his rookie campaign with a seventh-place finish at regionals. His season was highlighted by a victory by decision over Jacob Caricato of Vermont State Castleton in the first dual meet of the season, in addition to several podium finishes. He was also named a NWCA Scholar All-American after his placement at regionals to go along with a 4.0 GPA.
Russ was also named to the NEWA All-Rookie team, along with
Robby Lyons (Milford, Mass.). Lyons finished in first place at 125 pounds in NEWA Futures to go along with several exhibition wins in dual competition.
To round out the end-of-year plaudits, NEWA recognized 20 Cadets on its All-Academic team to go along with earning NWCA Team Scholar Champions in March.
