NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Lasell College
outscored Norwich University 8-2 in the first half, on its way to a
13-5 victory in Pilgrim League men's lacrosse action on
Grellier Field Saturday afternoon.
Brian Yepez, Chris Bulkley and Andy Puopolo led the
Lasers' attack, combining for twelve points. Yepez and
Bulkley both finished with one goal and three assists, while
Puopolo added two goals and two helpers. Jon Elia chipped in a
game-high three goals for Lasell (4-10, 3-3 Pilgrim).
Justin Pearson and Patrick Sikora each scored two goals apiece
to lead the way for Norwich (8-6, 1-4 Pilgrim). Michael White added
one goal and one assist for the Cadets, who have lost three
straight games. Nate Fortezzo and Jesse Mattson each dished out one
assist to round out the scoring for Norwich.
The game started promising for the Cadets as Pearson scored his
first goal less than four minutes into the game to stake the
visitors to a 1-0 lead.
Puopolo evened the score less than one minute later when he took
a feed from Bulkley and beat Norwich goalkeeper Nathan Proctor
inside the strong side post. Sean Speciale potted the go-ahead goal
at the 5:02 mark, securing a pass from Bulkley across the crease
and beating Proctor for a 2-1 LC lead at the end of the first
quarter.
The second quarter proved to be almost entirely Lasell's
as the Lasers scored six times in the frame to blow the game open.
Speciale opened the quarter with his second goal of the contest as
he unleashed a rocket from the top of the restraining box. Yepez
made it 4-1 at the 9:32 mark of the second quarter when he
maneuvered around a double-team and beat Proctor to his weak
side.
Sikora netted his first goal of the contest about two minutes
later to trim NU's deficit to 4-2, but Lasell ended the half
by scoring four unanswered goals to take a commanding 8-2 cushion
into halftime.
The Lasers opened the second half quickly as Elia scored from
close range just 1:02 into the frame to boost the Lasers'
edge to 9-2. White scored a man-up goal with 12:49 to play in
the third period to halt Lasell's 5-0 run, but Sam Wilcox
scored from the top of the formation within two minutes of
White's tally to make the score 10-3.
Pearson's second goal of the contest made it 10-4, but and
Adam Foss and Elia scored within a 16-second span late in the third
quarter to give Lasell a 12-4 lead heading into the fourth period.
Sikora dropped in his second goal of the game with 5:26 left in
the game, and Jake LaMorte scored with 1:33 remaining to cap the
scoring.
Eric Walsh picked up the victory for Lasell in net, playing the
first half of the contest. Tyler Silliman came on to play the
second half and made four saves. Proctor stopped 10 shots in
the losing effort.
Norwich continues its Pilgrim League slate on Wednesday, April
28, when the Cadets travel to Cambridge, Mass., to face MIT at 4
p.m.
