Men's Tennis: Five Cadets earn Empire 8 All-Conference honors after historic 2025 season

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - A record-breaking 2025 campaign for the Norwich University men's tennis team culminated in a flurry of postseason accolades, as five Cadets were named to the Empire 8 Athletic Conference (E8) All-Conference Teams, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.

Keagan Bakke (Gun Barrel City, Texas), Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.), and Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) each earned Empire 8 East Division First Team recognition in singles action, while Stephen Hartigan (Tyngsboro, Mass.) collected Second Team honors in singles.

In doubles, the tandem of Bayly-Henshaw and Redmond was named to the East Division First Team, while the pairing of Bakke and Gabe Wettig (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) earned East Division Second Team laurels.

Bayly-Henshaw also represented Norwich on the 2025 Empire 8 Men's Tennis Sportsman of the Year Team.  Each Empire 8 institution selects one student-athlete who has consistently exhibited outstanding sportsmanship, with the league emphasizing that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is a vital component of the student-athlete experience and institutional mission.

The Cadets wrapped up a historic campaign under fifth-year Head Coach Scott Barker with a 10-4 overall record and a 4-1 Empire 8 mark, setting a new program record for wins in a single season.  Norwich advanced to the Empire 8 Semifinals after notching its first postseason win and home playoff match since 2015.

Bakke anchored the top singles position all season, finishing with a 10-1 record exclusively at No. 1 singles.  The senior displayed elite consistency and leadership, delivering crucial victories throughout the year, including a straight-set win over SUNY Delhi in the Empire 8 Quarterfinals.

Bayly-Henshaw capped off a perfect 11-0 singles campaign on the No. 2 court, becoming one of the league's most reliable performers.  The sophomore also received an Empire 8 Player of the Week honor in late April and closed his season with a win in Norwich's playoff victory over SUNY Delhi.

Redmond made an immediate impact in his debut season, going 11-1 overall in singles action, including 10-1 at No. 3 and a 1-0 mark at No. 1.  Redmond was a key contributor in both the regular season and postseason, and earned Doubles Team of the Week honors twice this spring.

Hartigan provided steady results throughout the lineup, compiling a 6-2 singles record while rotating across the No. 3, 5, and 6 positions.  The junior finished 3-2 at No. 6, 2-0 at No. 5, and 1-0 at No. 3, delivering key victories against Vermont State University Castleton and SUNY Delhi.

Bayly-Henshaw and Redmond teamed up at the top doubles flight for a stellar 9-2 mark in the spring.  The duo opened the season strong and closed even stronger, stringing together multiple decisive wins, including an 8-2 win in the Empire 8 Quarterfinals.  The tandem also earned Empire 8 Doubles Team honors on Apr. 14.

Bakke and Wettig were Norwich's second doubles mainstay, posting a 7-4 record on the No. 2 court and also earning Empire 8 Doubles Team plaudits early in the season.  Their reliable chemistry helped the Cadets secure several doubles points that proved pivotal in close matches, including the postseason win over SUNY Delhi.

Head Coach Scott Barker, who led Norwich to its first back-to-back playoff appearances since the 2015 and 2016 campaigns, expressed pride in the team's growth and accomplishments.

"This season was very special to me," Barker said.  "It was an honor to work with such an amazing group of students.  We all worked extremely hard to achieve this year's goals, and to make this season the best in Norwich's tennis program history.  I am so proud for all the recognition these players have received during the season, as well as the postseason All-Conference awards.  This is my most successful season so far as a head college tennis coach, and I look forward to another successful season next year working with this team."

Norwich's All-Conference awards cap off a season filled with milestones.  In addition to their 10-win season and first postseason victory in a decade, the Cadets earned seven weekly honors across Player of the Week and Doubles Team of the Week selections, led by Bakke, Bayly-Henshaw, Redmond and Wettig.

The Cadets concluded their inaugural season as an associate member of the North Atlantic Conference and affiliate member of the Empire 8 with a hard-fought loss at the West Division's top-seed, Nazareth University, in the Empire 8 Semifinals, on May 2.  Norwich finished the 2025 campaign with a 92-30 record between singles and doubles competition, including a 61-19 margin in singles with a 31-11 mark in doubles play.
