NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team made history on Saturday afternoon, topping Albertus Magnus College, 5-4, in a Senior Day clash to cement their spot in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament for the first time since the 2016 season.
Prior to Saturday's match, the Cadets honored their two graduating seniors, celebrating
Assumpta Nandawula (Bakersfield, Calif.) and
Matthias Tchantouridze (Montpelier, Vt.) for their dedication and efforts to the tennis program over the last four years.
The Cadets enjoyed a victory in doubles action, courtesy of
Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) and Nandawula capturing No. 1 doubles, 8-4, but found themselves in an early hole after the Falcons claimed competitive bouts in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
The tides turned in singles, however, as Bayly-Henshaw claimed No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3, over Rockenson Charles. Nandawula kept the wins rolling with 6-4, 6-1 decisions over Diego Martinez Jimenez in No. 2 singles. The Falcons got a pair back in No. 3 and No. 4 singles competition, but Norwich's exhilarating victories came in No. 5 and No. 6 battles, as
Sean Horgan (Kennebunk, Maine), the reigning GNAC Rookie of the Week, took down Jarrell Petteway, 6-1, 6-4, before
Ethan Teluk (Manlius, N.Y.) sealed the deal with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Gustav Muller.
