Men's Tennis: Cadets conclude record-breaking season in Empire 8 Semifinal loss to St. John Fisher

AUGUSTA, Maine - The Norwich University men's tennis team saw its record-setting 2026 season come to a close on Friday evening, falling to St. John Fisher University, 4-0, in the Empire 8 Semifinals at the A Cop Tennis & Sports Center, hosted by Thomas College in Augusta, Maine.

Norwich, the East Division's No. 2 seed, closes the spring at 13-4 overall and 4-1 in Empire 8 play after reaching the conference semifinal round for the second straight season.  The Cadets also finish the year with the most wins in a single season in program history, while posting a 9-1 mark inside Shapiro Fieldhouse and a 4-2 record on the road

St. John Fisher, the West Division's top seed, advances to Saturday's Empire 8 Championship match to face Alfred University after the Saxons defeated host Thomas College, 4-0, in the day's opening semifinal.

The Cardinals established the early advantage by securing the doubles point, winning the two completed courts before the top-flight match was halted.  At No. 2 doubles, Finn Whitaker and Sean Brown were first to finish, defeating Stephen Hartigan (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Juan Gonzalez Torres (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico), 6-0.  St. John Fisher then clinched the point on the third court, where Matthew Lincoln and Sebastian Dix earned a 6-1 win over Diego Lorente Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) and Reynard Gan (Chandler, Ariz.).

The No. 1 doubles match between Tyler Hernandez and Will Chubb and Norwich's pairing of Jaxson Redmond (Kennebunkport, Maine) and Terrance Bayly-Henshaw (Scottsville, N.Y.) went unfinished with the Cardinals holding a 4-1 edge when doubles play concluded.

St. John Fisher carried that momentum into singles competition and quickly added to its lead.

Redmond was the first singles player to see his match decided, as Hernandez claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 1.  The Cardinals moved one point from the finish shortly afterward when Dix defeated Hartigan, 6-0, 6-2, on the fourth court.

The deciding point came at No. 3 singles, where Lincoln turned in a 6-1, 6-1 result against Lorente Fuentes to seal the overall 4-0 semifinal win for St. John Fisher.

Three additional singles matches were left unfinished once the team decision had been reached.  At No. 2, Chubb had taken the opening set, 6-1, against Bayly-Henshaw.  At No. 5, Brown's match against Gonzalez Torres remained unfinished, as did the No. 6 contest between Charlie Roberts and Gan.
