Wrestling: Three Wrestlers Finish in Top 8 at Regionals

GORHAM, Maine – The Norwich University Wrestling team concluded their 2022-23 campaign with three wrestlers reaching the podium at NCAA New England Regionals over the weekend. As a team, they finished 12^th totaling 42.5 points.

The big story of the weekend was junior Mason Sprinkel (Bel Air, Md.) who entered competition as the eighth seed in the 285-pound class. In the first round, Sprinkel dominated Spencer Dickenson of Western New England going up 10-2 in the second period before securing a victory by fall. This set up a Quarterfinal matchup with top seeded Liridon Leka from Johnson & Wales which was a tied contest into the second period before Sprinkel pinned Leka at 4:17. On day two in the Semifinal Carl DiGiorgio from Coast Guard won by a 6-4 decision and Sprinkel would place fifth. Taking first place in the 285-pound was Southern Maine's Jake Peavey, whom Sprinkel defeated in Norwich's Feb. 11 dual with the Huskies.

The Cadets joining Sprinkel on the podium were Jabari Pinkney (Jessup, Md.) and Joseph Lotruglio (Andover, N.J.). Pinkney took a 5-2 decision victory over Ben Dubois from Roger Williams before falling to Johnson & Wales's Joziah Fry in the Quarterfinals and ended up finishing eighth in the 125-pound class. While Lotruglio pinned Plymouth State's Yuri Case early before losing a decision to Castleton's James Rodriguez and finishing seventh in the 141-pound class.

"We are happy with our performance as a team having outperformed expectations starting out with 3 8th seeds and ended with 8,7, and 5th place wrestlers," said Head Coach Alex Whitney. "It stings getting that close to qualifying for NCAAs and coming up short, but I am still pleased by our performance. As a team we really stepped up in multiple weights earning wins by pin."

The Cadets finish their season collecting 123 pins, surpassing last season's total of 120 and is the most in a single season for Norwich Wrestling. Full regional results courtesy of Track Wrestling.
