Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's lacrosse team survived a overtime threat from Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Rivier on Wednesday at Joanne Merrill Field, 15-14, seeing multiple records fall.
Payden Masaracchia (Enola, Pa.) scored six goals in the contest which tallied 128 goals for his career, breaking the previous record set by Scott McCarthy '97 of 126 goals. Jake Andrews-Pestana (Napa, Calif.) also struck three times, and Callum Jones (Burlington, Ont.) scored a pair of goals while dishing out two assists for a total of four points. Parker Campbell (Rockaway, N.J.) scored a goal and added onto his all-time assists record adding a pair.
After being held shut out in the first quarter, Andrews-Pestana took advantage of a man-up opportunity after, Jones found him open 11 seconds into the second quarter and Andrews-Pestana put the ball in the back of the cage. Masaracchia then responded with a goal 8:58, but Thomas Muraski (Keller, Texas) then won the ensuing face off, and then fired a shot into the back of the net, cutting the Rivier lead down to three.
The Raiders scored back-to-back goals, before Tyler Seidel (Centreville, Md.) scored before Jeffery Potter scored shortly after, to extend the Rivier lead to five. Masaracchia and Andrews-Pestana then scored two goals in the final 1:40 of the half, trailing 9-6 at the halftime intermission.
Norwich scored four straight goals to come out of the break holding a 10-9 lead with 13:02 on the clock in the third. Rivier was able to strike three times, as they took a two-goal lead. With 55 seconds remaining in the third Andrews-Pestana scored, but Rivier snuck in a goal with nine seconds remaining holding a 13-11 lead over the Cadets.
Norwich outscored Rivier 3-1 in the final quarter as the Norwich defense were able to control the Raiders offense forcing a 14-14 tie after regulation.
After each team had an opportunity in overtime, the Cadets had the ball in their offensive zone. After a timeout by the Cadets, Jones took the ball into play bringing the ball behind the net. Jones then passed the ball to the left of the net finding an open Campbell, who then charged out from behind the net, to the left of the goalkeeper, and scoring to end the contest 2:34 seconds into the overtime period.
Norwich (11-1, 6-0 GNAC) will host Regis on Saturday, Apr. 16 at 3 pm for their Senior Day contest. The Cadets will then play Anna Maria on Wednesday, Apr. 20 in a 4 pm matchup on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
