SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Norwich University wrestling team will send a member of the squad to nationals, after Kyle Merritt (Hope Valley, R.I.) defeated Chase Parrott of Springfield College in the 149-pound semifinals.
Merritt went 3-1 on the weekend defeating his first two opponents of the weekend, going 2-0 on Saturday, winning by pinfall in his first-round matchup and by decision 6-0 in the quarterfinal. Sunday morning Merritt clinched a trip to nationals by defeating Parrott by decision, 8-5. Merritt fell in the Regional final, but secured his trip to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on Mar. 11-12 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Daniel Curran (Peterbourough, N.H.) finished in eighth place at the regional championships at 174-pounds, earning eight points for Norwich.
At 165-pounds Tyler Barker (Round Rock, Texas) closed his weekend earning five points for the Cadets while going 2-2, closing out his week with a pinfall victory before falling in the second round of the consolation bracket.
Niko Chitty (Coral Springs, Fla.) earned 2.5 points for Norwich after winning his first matchup in the consolation bracket, pinning his opponent in 3:36.
Merritt the second Cadet wrestler to compete at Nationals in back-to-back championship seasons (2019, 2022), will represent Norwich at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on beginning Friday, Mar. 11 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
