SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – The Norwich University wrestling team competed Saturday in the first day of the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional hosted by Springfield College.
Norwich's Kyle Merritt (Hope Valley, R.I.) highlighted the day going 2-0 in his matches including a pinfall victory over his opponent at 149-pounds to start his day in 3:36. Merritt then earned a 6-0 decision victory over Nicholas Roeger of Castleton in the quartefinal. Merritt will face off against Chase Parrott of Springfield College tomorrow in the 149-pound semifinals.
Daniel Curran (Peterborough, N.H.) posted a 2-1 record for the opening day of regionals at 174-pounds, winning his first match of the day by tech fall. He dropped his quarterfinal match against Dominick Esposito of Merchant Marine but rebounded in his match in the consolation bracket with a pinfall victory.
Reaching the quarterfinal at 141-pounds, Joseph Lotruglio (Andover, N.J.) earned a victory in the championship bracket first round downing Danny Lightfoot for a 13-11 decision victory. Lotruglio was not able to overcome his opponent in the quarterfinal falling 8-1.
The Cadets will continue competition at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 27 with the first matches starting at 11 am at Springfield College.
