NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University wrestling team played host to New England College and Williams on Sunday, defeating the Pilgrims 46-9 while falling to Williams 27-22 in Andrews Hall.
The Cadets opened the day dropping their first two contests day to the Pilgrims, going down 9-0. Norwich then got a spark from a pinfall victory by Joseph Lotruglio (Andover, N.J.) to cut their deficit to three. Kyle Merritt (Hope Valley, R.I.) followed by pinning his opponent at 149-pounds.
After Cameron Wooldridge (Roanoke, Va.) pinned his opponent at 174-pounds, Tyler Barker (Round Rock, Texas) defeated Dylan Muffley in a 13-1 major decision victory. Daniel Curran (Peterborough, N.H.), Tyrian Saeturn (Dracut, Mass.) both pinned their opponents before Thoren Berg (Holliston, Mass.) pinned his opponent in eight seconds. Mason Sprinkel (Bel Air, Md.) closed out the contest with a win by pinfall in 1:51.
Norwich then turned their attention to Williams College who quickly earned 10 points with victories at 125 and 133-pounds, but the Cadets responded with a major decision win by Lotruglio and pinfall victory by Merritt to even the match up at 10 a piece.
After suffering 9-6 defeat at 157-pounds, the Ephs picked up a key win by tech fall 23-8, to take an 18-10 edge over Norwich. Curran earned six points with a pinfall victory over Dante Gutbrod in 6:52. William Smith of Williams earned a pinfall victory before Noprwich's Berg earned a pin at 197-pounds putting the Cadets down by two with one match remaining.
Thomas Goodwin clinched the victory for the Ephs, with a 4-0 decision ina tight match at 285-pounds.
Norwich will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 4 when they travel to Springfield College to take on the Pride in a dual meet. The Cadets will then host Plymouth State in their final home meet of the 2021-22 season.
